A walk to class final

In order to shorten this film I found scenes that seemed repetitive and focused on sections that really make the viewer focus on the architecture or the connection between spaces.

For my analysis of this film I took continuous screenshots and then picked the scenes that displayed a new space. I then collage them together to display the new views that were created by the montage. I then used symbols to show where each image is on the map.

When creating the longer version of this film I chose the clips specifically so that I would have a balance of the every day moments, happy memories, and tragedies. This is why cutting this film in half was difficult. After watching it over I found scenes that seemed repetitive or were not as important as others. I was also able to rearrange some scenes at the end and shorten some to add an increase or intensity in movement. The link below contains the video.

The image below shows the analysis for the film. I found it important to show the continuum of time throughout this and to show how powerful the words spoken in the clips were to the meaning of the film. The overlapping of the photos shows the connection of each event and how they could be connected by the same people or even be happening in the same span of time.

Trying to mimic the continuum of life through film....

As it has been said in one form or another 'The carousel keeps turning and you can't get off'. The second film I made I wanted to reflect the continuum of time and constant motion of life. Lately I have been interest in the concept of time, and its continuum.  I created this film with the concept that time never stops moving, tragic events happen at the same time as amazing memories, but the clock keeps ticking.  Below are the audio and video sources that were used within this film. I started with the idea of the concept and created a basic list of clips that would be needed to create the effect wanted. I was inspired by audio clips that I found and created the audio file first. I then found clips that most people of this time period can relate to tragedy wise, the thought of war with the atomic bomb, and the 9/11 attack. I also found happier moments and day to day motions that we may all go through. It was not until I finished piecing together the clips that I added the audio of the clock ticking in the background. Before I added it my teacher mentioned that there was no aspect of the passing of time in this video. This is why I added the clock audio, I wanted to add an aspect that time was passing but not in any specific time in the video. All of these events could be happening at the same time, the important factor is that time is still moving.

A Walk to Class

When I first started developing my film I had an idea in mind to create a path through providence that would focus on different aspects of the path. I went with the idea that while we are walking we do not completely take in our surroundings we mostly take in parts, sometimes we walk in 'autopilot' and just end up in our destination. As I was filming I kept this thought process in mind. After I had all the film I tried to just piece everything together to see what could work in connection to other things. I also found that after I had my clips together there was an element missing. It wasn't until after I finished my second video that I went back and put sound into this film. I found that sound added a dimension to the piece and an interest that it did not have before. As if you are looking more into the film to see what the music is trying to tell you. I named this film a walk to class to symbolize the walks we go through everyday almost on autopilot.

Filming.....

I decided to film in providence because it is in some places a high traffic area and in others very quite and open. The idea for my first film was to capture the people and architecture relationship. I find that many times we walk our everyday paths and do not notice beautiful moments or an interesting material used on a façade. Below is one of the clips I used, this is before it was edited or changed.

 

The montage of videos I have clipped together include both nature, architecture, and people, all within the same two blocks in providence. Throughout the video I focused on changing the saturation and seeing how color would effect the view. I found that if I decreased some of the saturation there would still be some red hue in the brick and you would focus more on the façade or the material. I also reversed some shots to see the effect it would give to the motion of the shot. Some scenes I slowed down or sped up to see if it would give more of an effect for the viewer to focus on different things within the shot. 

Reflection on Rose Hobart

For the analysis of Rose Hobart I took screenshots throughout the film and lined them up on my board. I found that when Joseph Cornell took the clips of the film and mixed them around he created a new story line and also new architectural spaces. From my screenshots I choose two scenes that were shown connected to each other to create a new space and then drew an axon to show that new space. In each drawing I outlined the figure that was Rose Hobart in red. Another important aspect I found within many of the clips was the door which contained a lot of ornament. This was a door that Cornell connected with many other scenes, as if there is always something different that this door leads to. Since there was a repetition of this door in many different axons I also outlined that in red. This can allow for another type of analysis of seeing where this door appears and how it relates to the other spaces made. It also allows for the analysis of when the woman is clipped into the same room, when she looks out of the scene and is shown then looking at herself in the next clip. 

 

Further Analysis of Rose Hobart

The creation of new space.

The realization that I have had while analyzing this film is that the clipping and changing of locations is purposeful. Joseph Cornell took a file with an actress he enjoyed, he found himself bored of the film and decided to change it. Cornell took pieces and mixed them together with other portions of the film. This is very similar to the style of his art work, he takes pieces and collages them together and creates a new meaning. After cutting together different portions of this film he created new spaces.

 These two clips are shown together which confuses the audience. Since it is the same woman in what appears to be the same room after the quick transition. They almost appear to be looking at each other. Cornell uses this trick multiple times within Rose Hobart, it almost appears that the actress is looking into the next screen and then there is a switch to a new location. This type of transition creates a thought that this is one space with the two woman in it together.
