final project

This is my original drawdel that I made when I was analyZing the site, I used this for inspiration when designing my building. The two main aspects that stuck out to me were the two axis lines which indicated two buildings and the shadows that were casting from the cut outs of the drawdel.

Above you can see the beginning sketches of these two buildings. I sketched out different ways that these buildings could be connecting or separating and I decided on having a main core in the middle of my two masses. Another aspect I kept in mind was the axis created from the library and the flower wall on the site I wanted to maintain the line that was created by these buildings. I also decided to have an elevated lobby area that would be lifted from the main ground plan. As I was developing this I wondered what could happen in this area and decided that I would go back to the shadow idea that was shown by my drawdel so I developed the model below to test this idea of the sun changing the pattern

structure

I have been thinking about having these diagonal tapering columns and then having a grid for beams and columns that will connect to this diagonal system.

Another type of system I have been thinking about is having thin columns frequently in a grid pattern, resembling something natural like the site I am in . I will try both systems and see which works best.

One of my filmic effects in drodel form

Above is my drodel for the filmic effect shot reverse shot. In some of the avant-garde films use the shot reverse shot in the way that you are watching a character talk and then the screen switches to show you who she is looking at and it is the same actress in a different part of the film. I wanted to use the same type of effect in my theater area. These are the three points where you are able to see two theaters from the same position. The top theater I want you to be able to see people laughing or smiling and in the next look see a horror film or scary scene. The bottom right is the effect that I want you to be able to see the top of one person and the legs of another theater. The last effect on the bottom left would be people scared by the film and a calm scene in the other side.

moving forward

I started by planning out a section, so I could see how the levels would connect to the ground.

In this section I was thinking about how I could Organize the library section.

The floor plan I drew is above, I have realize I need to move the theater to the other side so that there is more room for the transition. I also found that I need to make the core larger and create a larger overlap that will be a clear connection.

further exploration of my drottle and my film terms

This week I have been working on developing the shape of my building and creating a more dynamic design. One of my comments I received at the review was that my building wasn't really towers and was turning into more of a horizontal building as I expanded it. I thought a possibility to work with this comment a bit would be to start with one tower and have it expand to two different towers.

From my searches online I found an image similar to this one for dissolve. I thought maybe I could incorporate this into my building as it transitions into another space, similar to my drottle.

This is the concept sketch I was working on to play out the forms a bit to expand the building, and incorporate the form of the drottle .

drawing some inspiration from my drottle

I am trying to play with the facade a little to create different shapes to create a more dynamic facade.

Back to the Basics

So in order to amp it up, as they may say some place some where, I decided to go back to the readings and redefine some words.

Dissolve- The transition between two sequences or scenes. 1st image disappears gradually and is replaced by another.

Eyeline matching- a term used to lint to the continuity editing process. Based on the belief that when a character looks off screen and you then see what he or she is looking at.

Shot/reverse shot- two alternating shots. As if two people are talking. You see one then the other.

Center-cinema- experimental. Questions and subverts existing cinematic codes and conditions. Very discontinuous.

So how are these used in the avant-guard films?

Well often time we would see eyeliner matching as more of a transition. In the movie I analyzed Ross Hobart, she would look out into the distance and walk off screen and it would transition to her being outside.

Shot reversal is used in avant-guard film often. One example of it being used in Rose Hobart, she is appearing to be having a conversation with herself.

Dissolve would be better explained by 49 seconds, where the scenes seem to overlap because of the use of overlapping film.

Counter cinema could be explained by avant guard in general. Each movie is cut and pieced together in an unconventional way, it is difficult to make sense of it or keep things in order because the story is completely remade.

Bold Bold Bold

So what I learned from the midcrit was that I need to incorporate my film themes more wholey into the project and let it express itself more clearly. And ofcourse just make everything more bold and intense. As emerald would say it's time to kick it up a knotch.

second blog on the long drive home, carpenter center

The precedent study continues as I sit in the passenger seat again on our long journey home to Bristol.

Looking at the Carpenter center for a precedent study for the ramp going up to my building.

It could be interesting to think of this as a ramp that could wrap around the building rather than through the building , or it could possibly have outlets at different levels and actually go through the two towers. I may do a sketch of these two concepts to talk about in the critique tomorrow.

This is a nice visual to show how the ramp will not disrupt the entire site, I think this is important to consider when dealing with a very particular site like ours. With this in mind I have reconsidered the diagonal placing of my building and have decided to straighten it back out to be parallel with the library. I believe it was important to explore the possibility of it being diagonal to look at all be possibilities for the location of the building.

Lewis, Tsurumaki, Lewis, filmplex

Throughout my design I have been trying to implement the film word shot reverse shot. This term meaning that you see one view then the opposing view. I also wanted to incorporate cross-cutting into this. My concept is to have it possible to see the screen of one theater and the audience of another theater at one time. In my first attempt I tried to have one theater on one side and another theater on the other and have a path with openings. However, this may not be the best solution because it may disrupt the viewing of either video. After looking at the film plex by Lewis, Tsurumaki, and Lewis I figured that I could achieve this by having a separate path above and giving more room to the theaters by increasing the square footage.

It also could be interesting to have a viewable spot from outside of the building as this concept sketch shows.

Continuing on by Connecting my two Schemes

I have furthered my analysis of my drodel and have concluded that the scheme with two towers best represents my drodel in an exterior sense. However, I still plan on incorporating specific ideas from interior of my circular scheme.

After figuring out exactly what each room was used for I then made a web noting which rooms needed to be next to each other for function purposes. I also used this chart to indicate which rooms may be used as a service to other rooms. The photo on the right shows my next step, where I started to separate my program back into the two towers. Trying to keep the two highly used public areas close to the entry. From the diagrams on the right side you are able to see my thoughts about possible design ideas to incorporate. Including a central core system and interlocking floors.  The circular room was taken from the other scheme, I originally wanted to have square rooms in a circle building however, I am experimenting with the idea that this might give the same effect.

Within this drawing I am just trying to map out some of the program and see where entries might be located. I thought it would be interesting to enter from the middle and have the staircases align.
Above and below are elevation studie of what the shape of the building might look like.

2 schemes derived from drodel

The first scheme I created started with two towers, which was taken from the two larger cutouts in my drodel. I then separated the program in an appropriate order from how I interpreted the program. Below you can see the sections and model for this scheme.

As you can see from the two models above there is an obvious exterior circulation which I took from the strands that were prevalent within the shadow of my drodel. In the drawing below you are able to see a possible wall penetration that could be used to create a dissolving effect on the walls of the circulation. The idea for this came from the shadows that were shown from the cut outs of my drodel.
In this section you are able to see the double heighted spaces that I incorporated within the different floors. I want to eventually transition to the idea of having interlocking floors.
This drawing shows a possible effect that could be incorporated within my building, the reverse shot. When you are in the same hall way you can see the audience from one theater and the screen from another.

For my second scheme I wanted to have a design that was shocking and would confuse the patron, similar to the avant-garde films. I first had an idea of an overall circular structure with square or rectangular rooms. The model below shows the progression of the idea with some type of ridged shape to the outside.

I incorporated different heights into this scheme as well. I wanted to have four different structure because of the four voids in my droddle. I plan to separate the program within these structures by use.

Above is one of the film techniques that I hope to incorporate, the cross-cutting. This would be achieved by having a square room with a widow showing the actual shape of the structure, a circle.

Some Interesting Photos from Mexico City

I have been looking through the photos taken by our studio group from Mexico city and have chosen some interesting textures and sculptures that were seen throughout the city. I think these will be great to keep in mind while I am designing my building. Also, the food looks amazing I'm glad you were all able to pick up some yummy snacks during your trip.

This is a very interesting texture that could also give the illusion of a perspective view. This could be interesting to use with one of the film effects such as zoom or perspective.

I found this arch way very interesting and the colors are beautiful.

This was a sculpture found in one of the museums and I find the texture and the pattern very interesting. It reminds me of the intricate patterns incorporated into the library and also in the murals around the campus.
